How much have engineers managed to control the flow of the river basin and redirect its tributaries to create one large drainage system? How much can do we owe hydraulic engineers with providing us with fresh drinking water, an efficient sewage system, power, transport and many other human-made advancements that we enjoy today?
I don’t believe our centralized water system is fit for today economic and social challenges! I think we need to allow fresh water to flow naturally through our landscape by re-naturalising our engineered waterways. And we need to unblock the river arteries and let the watercourse have the freedom to flow before we kill the soul of the landscape
I don’t believe we should re-wild water basins. We can influence the flow of the water in a ay which can benefit nature and society.
If we imagine that landscape has a living soul, then we know different places have their own character.
First step to understanding how the water should flow through a space is to understand the character of the area. Sometimes a landscape is wild, and the water should be left to run free. Sometimes the area is artificial and controlled and we should leave engineers to intervene. There is room space for a variety of drainage systems, but this should be decided in accordance with what is beneficial for the local landscape.
